5 out of 5 stars McAfee: Most bang for your buck!   September 24, 2009

With Bit Defender and Kaperski, McAfee rates in the top 3 on many internet security reviews (#2). Here are my 10 cents worth after using all 3 of the above. Bit Defender has an excellent firewall but during a full scan, it tends to slow down the computer quite a bit. Of the 3, Kaperski has the fastest scan. Both Mc and Ski have very good firewall. But only Mc's firewall was certified by ICSA labs in 2009. Of the 3, I found Mc's Antivirus to be superior to the other 2 ( a solid A minus - B+ for the others). It was particularly well suited in detecting malicious items from foreign websites. The user interface in Mc's was more friendly than the other 2. Although ski's is only slightly just a notch behind. Mc's uses simple to understand traffic lights. Red: warning do not click into the website. Yellow: use caution. Green: OK! What could be more simple. In terms of price Mc's is stuck between the two.
Therefore here is the verdict: Bit defender - Excellent Firewall and above average AntiVirus. Slow scan and excellent price. Kaperski: very good firewall and Antivirus. Fastest Scan. It does everything very well, but does not excel in one particular area. Downside: a little pricey. Reviewer's choice: McAfee. A very good firewall and excellent Antivirus. Scan speed C+. Full of features and user friendly (a 7 year old could understand their color code). McAfee has set the standard for your complete computer protection. It's a no brainer.

5 out of 5 stars It is what it is - until it fails at that.   October 12, 2009

I purchased this on a goldbox deal and installed it on two computers in the last week.

As the title says: it is what it is.

It's a "protection package" that you basically buy for the antivirus . . . the rest is basically social engineering.

Firewall & "Internet Protection" is subjective -- if you only surf and e-mail, it's helpful, but otherwise it blocks ports, which you could be using for one protocol or another. Adding a firewall to an average person's machine is terribly frustrating if a port needs to be opened. Worse, if they need support to talk them through doing so, if the software isn't VERY intuitive it can add to this experience. I've yet to encounter "home" software that is good at this.

Antivirus - it's one of the leading brands; not much to expect, not hard to meet the expectation.

Backup & Restore - honestly, there's nothing better than making your own backups. Lots of good software exists to automatically back up your software, but I wouldn't purchase this package for this particular reason.

Web Filter - again, there are better and there are worse. If you're REALLY concerned about the parental filtering, you need to get a dedicated service that is proactive about updates, not an afterthought on a package. Some browsers have features like this built-in, but I've yet to find one that didn't have false positives (as I don't visit sites with malware).

Updates . . . if you just "fix" security issues, it may enable MS updates. This led me on a 2-hour reinstall of drivers . . . but that's a Microsoft issue, not necessarily this software. You should keep your Windows updated, but you need to set aside time to do updates and MAKE SURE things work afterwards . . . it's just a peril of Windows.

    ==============================================================================================================
Update - I have to, unfortunately, send this to the "do not buy" list.

On my mother's work computer, my father was (reluctantly) trying to catch up on e-mails and clicked on a "forwarded" message URL which brought him to the most convincing scareware site I'd ever seen. It did an install of an "antivirus" program which totally and utterly rendered McAfee useless without so much as a peep from the real antivirus. The result was a set of self-downloading viruses and trojans that I was only able to exercise through safe-mode (disable EVERYTHING that starts up) then use of Panda online, Symantec online (and something else I can't remember). Each removed malware & viruses that the others managed to leave behind.

After I'd corrected those issues, McAfee was monopolizing the processor and memory starting on login and had to be uninstalled.

It's a shame that people have to go through this - I had a hard time and know (relatively speaking) what I'm doing. Panda and Norton (in my experience) may not have prevented you from clicking on something that scares you into installing it, but they would have prevented some of the additional infections and at least notified you of the problem. McAfee was easily circumvented.

    Good luck folks.

3 out of 5 stars Reasonable value, but uninspiring feature set   November 21, 2009

Virus scan is still the core of the McAfee Internet Security suite. Unfortunately, it's a little hard to rate the quality of the virus scan itself without conducting a lot of rigorous testing. The lab reports that I have seen rate it very highly. Over the last 15 years, I've used virus scanners from McAfee, Symantec, and AVG. For any given threat, one may get updated quicker than another, but they all seem to have about the same degree of effectiveness.

The other features of the product, while nice, come off as something of an afterthought. Internet Security adds parental controls, phishing detection, document shredding (overwrites deleted files' data with random characters to prevent recovery), and spam filtering. I did not get a chance to use the spam filtering since I use a hosted mail account at home.

The parental controls were especially weak. The copy of Norton 2006 which this replaced had much more granular controls over which account could go to what sites. The built-in parental controls on OSX exceed even that - allowing specific control of what applications an account is allowed to run and which email addresses they can communicate with. Providers of Windows security software really need to bring their products up to speed with what Apple provides out of the box.

The install process took approximately half an hour. Halfway through, it presented a warning that it could not proceed with the install, but then installed anyway. It also required the removal of Spybot Search & Destroy - a high quality free antispyware program which I have found to be a useful supplement to commercial security software.

This product seems to do the job well enough, but next time I upgrade I will probably go back to the Symantec product line. On the positive side, the price is very reasonable for a 3 PC license.

    2 out of 5 stars Nagware   November 11, 2009
Nathan Beauchamp (Oak Park, IL USA)
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

The issues I've had with McAfee go back several years, starting in 2006, well before I discovered better free applications to take care of protecting my computer. I only took on their newest release because I could test it for free through Vine. Suffice it to say, not much has changed from previous years and the problems that plagued the older versions are still present in this newest release. This is a below average virus protection suite considering there are better alternatives that are free. (Check the comments section of this review for a complete list). I've coined the term 'nagware' for McAfee and other programs like it that produce annoying pop-ups and reminders that cannot be shut off regardless of the user's desire to see them.

What this program will do is give you basic virus protection and scanning, as well as a bulk of features that some may find useful such as parental controls and data back-up (which works very poorly compared to a true data back-up program like Acronis True Image. This suite includes many features that the typical user will not want or need, or that are inferior versions of free-ware applications (such as the shredder which is vastly inferior to the free CCleaner).

To their credit, McAfee has reduced the memory footprint of this version of their internet security software from the previous version. In the age of dirt cheap ram, this memory size isn't as important as it used to be, but if you are running an older computer with less than 3gbs of ram, you will notice that this software slows down your machine, particularly boot up times.

That said, assuming one wanted all of the features of this suite, there are still some major drawbacks to McAfee Internet Security worth mentioning:

    1) Annoying pop-ups from your system tray to 'notify' you of necessary upgrades, downloads, and some just flat out advertisements. Many of these are for McAfee products that you may or may not want--regardless you cannot turn off these annoyances, some of which will pop up while running full screen applications like games or watching a DVD! (Allegedly there is a feature that is supposed to prevent this from happening--let me tell you, it doesn't work properly). Let me repeat this for clarity: You CANNOT disable McAfee from issuing these focus stealing pop-ups. There is a setting in the program to stop reminders from popping up, but it doesn't actually eliminate them. Worst of all, when your subscription gets close to expiring, you will then be hit with DAILY reminders to upgrade, even if you never intend to do so. You have two options at that point: uninstall McAfee or continue to be nagged incessantly until you do. You will receive these unwanted adds, reminders, and generally nagging messages without any ability to stop them.

    2) McAfee anti-virus does not scan or properly remove Spyware. That means you will need a separate third party program to hand this for you. Some free programs include this feature, so why does a program you pay money for NOT include it?

    3) General slowness of web browsing. McAfee has got to be THE WORST anti-virus in terms of how much it slows down web browsing. I've used literally used dozens of virus scanners in my time, and interestingly the two worst are the mainline consumer offerings from Norton and McAfee. Web browsing just lags running this program, noticeably slower than Avast or AVG. The web-site safety ratings are just about worthless unless you are a total newbie to surfing the internet. I don't need someone to tell me that [...] is a safe address anymore than I need to be told I could get viruses from visiting Torrent sites. If you seriously need this feature, then I suppose it has value, but it will certainly slow down your page load times and make surfing slower than it ever should be.

    4) The McAfee network solution is a joke. You can set one computer to manager another computer's status--supposedly to allow you to keep that computer up to date with virus definitions and remotely engage scans. If this worked it would be a good feature and useful in multi-computer households. However, it is largely broken. To work both computers must be 'active' so you will need to walk to the other computer and wake it up--eliminating the benefit of remote management. The other problem is that once you've selected on computer to manage another, there is no way to reverse the arrangement except uninstalling McAfee entirely! This is just idiotic and requires so much messing around it makes this feature worthless.

    5) Only 30 days of phone support. If you have a problem with the software, you better hope it happens in 30 days or less. Otherwise be ready to pay exorbitant rates for phone support or wait days and days for e-mail responses from tech support.

In conclusion, this software is superfluous at any price considering the number of free alternatives that offer better protection. (This isn't just me saying that, various third party research bears it out--check out the link I've provided in the comments section of this review). Free always trumps costs money unless the product that costs money is superior in some regard. In this case you're paying for nothing more than a name. Oh, and a few annoying pop-ups.

    *****UPDATE 01-01-2010*****

Microsoft has recently released their excellent MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS for fee. It also recently won an award for being the best anti-virus program out there. Bests of all it's FREE to anyone with a valid copy of Windows (XP through Windows 7). I've been using it for a few months now and let me tell you, it's just about the best anti-virus I've encountered. Searches are wicked fast, the interface is slick, and best of all it has a tiny memory footprint! Updates are free FOREVER. Did I mention the program itself is completely free? Just Google search MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS, download, install, and you're good to go.

2 out of 5 stars A decent antivirus software, but severely lacks on most everything else   January 19, 2010
    Conrad Alan (San Francisco, CA)
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

It works as a basic antivirus software, but it did fail on a few occasions of extreme testing. Luckily, I tested it on my test PC where I usually try out software first before installing on my main PCs. It failed on some vicious trojans, viruses, and worms including Vundo, Artemis!, and Puper!a. Granted, I was a bit extreme with testing this antivirus/internet security software. Everything else was lackluster. The McAfee Security Suite that came with my DSL is much better. Maybe some bugs still needs to be worked out. As reviewed, I would not recommend this to family or friends, so I cannot recommend it to those reading this review. I will test it further in the future. Results pending.
