good product generally December 1, 2009 DF (East of the Mississippi) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've used McAfee for years, and I prefer it over several other products I've used. But you need to understand that, while McAfee is very end-user friendly, MCAFEE DOES NOT STOP EVERYTHING. In fact, as one reviewer said, there ARE indeed better products out there. But I find them difficult to use. I just set up my firewall and system so that nothing gets downloaded without my express okay, and then I save everything and virus scan before opening. Additionally, it's my observation that McAfee is not that great at detecting and removing spyware and adware. Thus, I use two other freeware programs and I scan with all three. Spybot and Adaware both frequently catch things that the other two programs I use do not.
I haven't had to use McAfee customer service except to deal with an auto renewal issue with McAfee last summer, and let me tell you, the fellow who had bad things to say about customer service wasn't kidding about how difficult it is to find assistance and actually get it. Customer service calls are enough to send you postal!
UPDATE 1/12/2010: I just had to call McAfee customer service and this occasion it was easy, pleasant, and my problem was immediately resolved. So perhaps the various negative comments have been heard.
"Total Protection" is Totally Helpless February 17, 2010 Igor Danilishen 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Only wasted 30 bucks, because it is helpless against the Antivirus Soft rogue anti-spyware (ransomware that claims to be 'antivirus' but is, in fact, a virus itself) that almost totally disabled my computer 1. Had to buy SpyHunter (40 bucks), which helped. On computer 2, it let the malicious worm Worm.Win32 thru, which infected all the files. Had to use Windows OneCare Safety Scanner to successfully remove it(spent a day plus the frustration, but free of charge). Now I never know when Antivirus Soft or Worm.Win32 or some such hits my computers again because, as I say, the McAfee "Total Protection" is TOTALLY HELPLESS.
I also called McAfee Customer Service. They immediately demanded that I pay $99.00, and "then they would fix the problem." I asked what they were going to do. They said they'd use the latest McAfee update to clean my system from the spyware. I suggested McAfee updates itself automatically on a regular basis, so I must have the latest update already, and it doesn't work, to which they hung up. So much for the McAfee Customer Service.
Complete Waste!!! WTF!!! February 1, 2010 A. Holloway Jr. (INDIANAPOLIS, IN, US) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this product because my computer was getting to a point where it was extremely sluggish on startups and running the high powered programs I need. There had been a Norton Internet Security program that was pre-installed on the PC (Compaq) when I bought it. I uninstalled that and replaced it with McAfee Total Security 2010 immediately afterwards. Within a day or so, I was unable to do ANYTHING on my computer! Not even CTRL+ALT+DELETE. I took it to the PC repair folks and they wiped my computer clean($70), starting at square 1. I loaded, Windows Media Player, and Fruity Loops (an audio production program), and McAfee. Within ANOTHER day or so, I apparently ended up with the SAME virus! I've had this computer for 4 years and it has Never failed me to a point like this. I had to cough up ANOTHER ($70). Afterwards, I load Windows Media Player, Fruity Loops again and then some free software the IT guy from work suggested to download. (AVG, and A-Squared). My computer has been fine since. Im not an expert on computers or anything, but I'd say it was McAfee that cost me more money in the long run. Not sure if different Anti-Virus software works better with other computers or not, but it DEFINETELY crashed my whole system completely!
Has Some Serious Issues January 8, 2010 avidreader2 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Note: I initially posted this in the McAfee Total Protection 3-user 2010 in error. Am posting the same review here, which is the software I purchased.
I have been using McAfee security software for the last several years to protect my system, but this may be the last year. My complaints are similar to those posted by others. I've now been using this McAfee Total Protection 2010 (MTP) for over a month.
When I installed it, it would not work at first, and I spent 55 minutes on the telephone with a McAfee tech in order to uninstall and reinstall. I initially could not download the recommended McAfee tool myself because the MTP caused my browsers (Firefox and IE8) to freeze while loading, preventing access to the internet. The first 6 -7 suggestions the McAfee tech made did not help. Finally was able to uninstall and reinstall.
Since then, I've also received SEVERAL "your computer is not protected" messages, including ones asking me to resend my product key info so my copy could be validated again. How many times in a few weeks does the same software on the same computer need validation?
As noted by others, this is a tremendous resource hog. When running, the MTP slows down my computer to the extent that it is miserable to use. Opening Firefox or IE8 takes a couple of minutes (yep, click on the browser and then go do something else for a few minutes), and even switching from website to website takes nearly a minute -- I've learned to schedule my computer use around the running of the Total Protection, since I won't get much done while it's running.
As far as protecting my system, well, it hasn't notified me of anything yet, so I hope that's a good sign. Still, I'll be investigating other security software over the next year to see what may be better. I can live with a temporary issue such as having to uninstall and reinstall the software, but subsequently being told my computer isn't protected, my software isn't validated and being unable to use the internet easily while the MTP is running are serious flaws.

I have been using McAfee for a couple of years now. My subscription renewal was due in mid November. Checking with McAfee's website before my renewal showed a renewal price of $69.99 for this product. By purchasing from Amazon, I saved half the money at a cost of reinstalling my software. No brainer there.
From a technical standpoint, the program does what I expect it to do. I also do not have to modify the settings to be able to access some of my favorite websites as I have had to do with other software.
All in all, worth the money.
